At Wolf Trap last night, after the charismatic, and energetic  CeeLo Green and his band of amazing musicians warmed up the audience into a frenzy, out came the music legend Lionel Richie.

Hit after hit were sung all night long tonight by the legendary composer/performer Lionel Richie as he lit up the Filene Center Stage to the roars of excited fans of all ages. And there was so much love and charm on that stage that you couldn’t help but smile, clap, wave your hands, and stand up and cheer as the man who wrote some of the most beautiful and romantic songs of my generation sang them all to an appreciative and excited audience. And to some of us who remember his days with The Commodores, there was a feast of songs he made famous with that group-some I didn’t remember or didn’t know. But when the well-known ‘Brick House’ and its fun lyrics were blasted all over the screens-the audience sang along and laughed and had a blast. It was that kind of night-all night long.

And having the person I love next to me during this concert-songs like “Hello” and “Truly” had extra emotional meaning. It was a night overflowing with love and affection.

lionel-richie-cee-loThis magnificent tour which took The Middle East and Australia and New Zealand and Asia by storm is a visual feast – complete with gorgeous projections – and an amazing band. It was handsdown  the best concert I have seen at Wolf Trap-and I have seen a lot of ‘legends’ in the Filene Center. Why? Lionel Richie is a rarity today – an entertainer who connects with his audience, who loves what he’s doing, a great storyteller who has a wonderful sense of humor, a mentor to young singers and musicians, and just loves what he is doing-and most important-on the stage he gives 1,000%. And last night he gave the audience their money’s worth. I lost count of how many songs-hits-he performed, but I don’t think he missed singing any of my favorites.

There is another performance tonight and I don’t want to give all the surprises away here, but suffice to say you will hear the classics including “Hello,” “Endless Love,” “Stuck on You,” “Easy,” “Three Times a Lady,” “All Night Long,” and “Dancing on the Ceiling.” Run and buy tickets. You don’t want to miss it!

And what I loved the best was Lionel Richie’s interaction with his musicians: Ethan ‘Bassman’ Farmer (guitar), Ben Mauro (guitar) and Dino Solo, who performs a feat with his sax which is jaw-dropping.

So thank you Lionel Richie and your band and your tour team for all the joy you brought me, the love of my life, and the thousands of fans who you touched last night and during our lives.

Running Time: Two hours and 45 minutes and a 20-minute intermission.

Lionel Richie and Special Guest CeeLo Green perform again tonight – July 22, 2014 at 8 PM at The Filene Center at Wolf Trap-1551 Trap Road, in Vienna, Virginia. For tickets, call the box office at (703) 255-1868, or purchase them online.
