Aldersgate Church Community Theatre is thrilled to present Shrek, Jr. to local audiences for the first time in the DC area. Shrek the Musical ran on Broadway from 2008-2010, and MTI released the new, junior version in the late fall of 2014. ACCT jumped on the chance to become the first group in the DC Metro Area to stage this fantastic adaptation. Featuring an exciting score with original songs including “Freak Flag,” and “Morning Person;” as well as popular tunes from the DreamWorks film – “What’s Up Duloc?” and “I’m a Believer” – the collaboration of Jeanine Tesori and David Lindsay-Abaire is a family-friendly original that retains all the humor and heart of the film.

We remember the story: In a faraway kingdom, the green ogre, Shrek, finds his swamp invaded by banished fairytale misfits, runaways who’ve been cast off by Lord Farquaad, a tiny terror with big ambitions. When Shrek sets off with a wisecracking donkey to confront Farquaad, he’s handed a task – if he rescues feisty Princess Fiona from the Dragon-guarded tower, his swamp will be returned to him. But, a fairy tale wouldn’t be complete without unexpected twists and turns along the way. Part romance and part twisted fairy tale, Shrek JR. is an irreverently fun show for the whole family.

ACCT Council President Marg Sooros commented, “Members of our show selection committee were familiar with the score and book of the show, and we were convinced it was the right pick for our 2015 children’s musical. We were tracking the show carefully with MTI and had our fingers crossed that it would be released in time. It’s been a very exciting process to create the characters, setting and costumes for Shrek The Musical JR. and the excitement of doing something new has been contagious for the production crew and the cast.”

Directed by Corey Bales, with choreography by Michael Page, Shrek The Musical JR. features 38 youth performers between the ages of 8-18. Cast members include Christian Fernandez in the title role of “Shrek,” Shannon Flack as “Princess Fiona,” and Brendan DeBie as “Donkey.”
