Ninth-annual dance concert to feature inspiring contemporary works from locally and nationally recognized choreographers – performed by outstanding HCC students, and guest artists
Continuing its tradition of bringing compelling and powerful dance to the Greater Baltimore Area, the Arts Collective Dance Company (ACDC) of Howard Community College (HCC) presents its ninth annual concert, offering four performances March 5 to 8, 2015, in the college’s Smith Theatre, directed by Joan Nicholas-Walker and Elizabeth Higgins.
Audiences will be captivated by works featuring Jazz, Contemporary and Modern dance styles. In this exciting and diverse concert; viewers will witness joy, grief, drama and humor, as the performers transport them through explorations of light and space, physical and emotional conflicts, relationships and musicality.
This year’s ACDC concert features outstanding HCC student dancers and guest artists as well as the stellar choreography of locally and nationally recognized artists, including Renée Brozic Barger, Jessica Beach, Mat Elder, Elizabeth Higgins, Natalie Marrone, Joan Nicholas-Walker, and Joseph W. Ritsch.

Homage
Choreographed by Jessica Beach
The choreographer pays homage to Bob Fosse in her classical jazz work where the movement is driven by the music and inspired by the director/choreographer who famously said, “Live like you’ll die.”

Between the Extremes
Choreographed by Elizabeth Higgins
This piece explores stages of confusion and chaos juxtaposed with calm moments of reflection. In these extremes and the transitions between them, the dancers express the physical and emotional conflict that defines these states and inherently links them through their opposition.

Revolt
Choreographed by Natalie Marrone
Revolt constructs an abstract ritualized space, where the wisdom of generations of Italian medicine women known as Strege, can have a voice in contemporary American culture, by fusing traditional images with contemporary dance styles.

About the Directors
Joan Nicholas-Walker began her dance training in Virginia at the age of five. She has consistently worked as a performer, choreographer, educator and arts administrator. Nicholas-Walker earned her B.F.A in Dance from George Mason University. While a student at GMU her choreographic work was selected for American College Dance Festival Association concerts in Michigan, Ohio and in Washington, D.C. at The John F. Kennedy Center. She was honored to perform the work of Shapiro and Smith, Ann Carlson, Claire Porter and selected for summer study with Twyla Tharp. Nicholas-Walker attended graduate school on an Enrichment Fellowship and as a Graduate Assistant at The Ohio State University where she earned her M.F.A. in Dance in 1999. While a student at OSU, she was awarded several grants to support her travel and research of dances in Madagascar. As a performer, Nicholas-Walker has had the pleasure of performing with D.C. Dance Theater, Even Exchange Dance Theater and performing the work of Liz Lerman, Gesel Mason, Valerie Alpert, Talani Torres and others. Her choreography has been awarded an NCDA Choreographic Fellowship, selected for the North Carolina Dance Festival Tour, and performed by several college dance programs and professional dance companies. As an arts administrator, Nicholas-Walker has worked as the Regional Coordinator for the Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts, the Outreach Coordinator at Howard Community College and the Administrative Director of two dance companies, including her own, NickWalk Dance Project. As an instructor in higher education, Nicholas-Walker has taught in the dance programs at George Mason University, California State University Long Beach, Meredith College, Community College of Baltimore County, and the University of Maryland Baltimore County. She was selected as the 2013 Inspiring Adjunct and the 2014 Inspiring Faculty Member at Howard Community College where she is currently an Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Dance.
Elizabeth Higgins joined the faculty at Howard Community College as an Assistant Professor of Dance in the fall of 2014. Since moving to Maryland in 2012 she served as adjunct instructor at HCC and has collaborated creatively with Silver Spring-based playwright Tom Block. Their productions of White Noise and La Bestia, have been performed in both New York City and in Takoma Park, MD. Prior to joining the artistic community of Maryland, she spent the majority of her career working in New York. As a dancer she performed and toured nationally and internationally with Murray Louis and Nikolais Dance, Dance Compass, the Brian Brooks Moving Company, Soundance Repertory Company, Pick of the Crop Dance, Mark Jarecke Dance and Don Redlich Dance. She served as rehearsal director and guest choreographer for Dance Compass and Pick of the Crop Dance. In addition, she danced with independent choreographers Marie Pelletier, Lise Brenner, Georgia Corner and several others. Her choreographic works have been presented throughout the US and in South America, including New York venues such as Joyce SoHo, Dance Theater Workshop (New York Live Arts) and the Cunningham Studio. She was presented by Dance Now/Downtown Arts Festival five seasons, was a recipient of the New Moves NY State Choreography Competition and received the Turner Choreography Award. Her company, Elizabeth Higgins Dance Theater, premiered its first season at Joyce SoHo and subsequently her work was chosen as one of the critics’ “Best Picks” by Back Stage Magazine. Fuzion Dance Artists of Sarasota, Florida has commissioned three of her works and she was featured as guest choreographer by the Steffi Nossen School of Dance for the 75th Anniversary Concert at SUNY Purchase. After completing her MFA at Florida State University as a University Fellow and Fellow of the School of Visual Arts and Dance, she served on the faculty at Marymount Manhattan College from 2003-06 as an assistant professor of dance composition. She has taught at several studios and institutions including Manhattanville College, Sarah Lawrence College, Hunter College, Columbia University, Florida State University, Peridance and the Spence School. She served as a teaching artist for the New York City Ballet Education Program for six years, working in the public school system of New York City and the surrounding communities. Elizabeth received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University as a Garden State Scholar. She is currently a member of the Nikolais Legacy Group, the National Dance Education Organization and serves on the Advisory Board of Fuzion Dance Artists.
