David Gregory gave an insightful and even at times humorous talk on his new book How’s Your Faith? An Unlikely Spiritual Journey about his journey to faith. After leaving his job as the moderator at Meet the Press he embarked on writing his book. He even interviewed Lakewood Church Pastor Joel Osteen and Russell Moore, President of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics & Religious Commission.
David talked for about 45 minutes describing his journey to faith and then took questions from the audience. It was an intimate crowd, which made it feel like we were having coffee with David.
David did a great job showing his vulnerability and sharing his journey to his deepening faith with the audience. He shared his faith got a kick-start with President Bush asking him, “How is your faith?, which became the title of his book.
David’s vulnerability and openness about his mother’s alcoholism, his own anger issues and his father’s anger’s issues, was humbling. He admitted being on TV is not a good environment for having humility, but he had tons of it now and it showed He described going on a book tour to be humbling as well.
David is down to earth and quite funny too. He started out his talk by saying, “Yes, I’m really this tall and I’ll let you adjust to it for a second.” He also said it must sound romantic that he met his wife during the Oklahoma City Bombing Trial. His wife was one of the lawyers on the defense team. Another funny/ sad tidbit he shared when he lost his Meet the Press job his son said, “Are we losing the house?”
What was most impressive about this talk was David’s opening people to his inner life. He is on a passionate quest to understand his faith, getting closer to God, and helping other people to do the same.
David takes his study of the Jewish faith seriously and it is clear how he is working on being a better person. David also signed books afterwards.
If you’re looking to be inspired, then definitely don’t miss David Gregory’s book tour. I can’t wait to read the book.
