‘Behind the Music: Holiday Edition’ at Act II Playhouse in Ambler, PA

Sonny Leo and April Woodall create a fun evening full of historical anecdotes, personal traditions, and holiday classics that are just as likely to melt your heart and make you laugh.

Matt Silva boots the show with fun choreography and blocking; April riding in sleigh while Sonny leads the way as a reindeer indicates the energy level of this show.

While Leo and Woodall tell the stories of the Holiday classics such as “Jingle Bells” and “O Holy Night,” some of the most fun parts of the show are original medleys arranged by the two performers. “Winter Wonderland” through the decades includes hilarious impressions, from the Andrew Sisters to Ozzy Osbourne. Touching personal stories are intertwined into a medley of “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”.

All of the songs are orchestrated beautifully, sung by the talented two-person cast. The stamina of the Sonny and April is insurmountable. The two carry the show entirely, and since they’re having a blast, we have a blast with them.

The set design by Maura Roach is warm and inviting with living room accoutrements, as well as White Birch trees lining the outskirts of the set, allowing different locations. A beautifully decorated Christmas tree and lamps hang from the ceiling and gives Lighting Designer Andy Shaw some fun options outside of the regular stage lighting.

Just in time before the holidays, Act II Playhouse brings a festive good time that you don’t want to miss. Behind the Music: Holiday Edition at Act II Playhouse is a real holiday treat!
