In Part 3 of a series of interviews with the cast of Ruthless! The Musical at Creative Cauldron, meet Tamarin Ythier.
Joel: Please introduce yourself and tell our readers where they may have seen you appear on local stages and roles you have played.
Tamarin: I’m Tamarin Ythier (not named after the monkey). I performed in the area for many years, then moved around for a bit doing shows in Tennessee and Illinois. Most recently, I played Poppy in Noises Off at Way Off Broadway, and was in I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change (part deux) with Epic Productions.
I play Louise Lerman and Eve. The scene with Louise is just goofy and silly and fun! With Eve, really that whole section of the show, I love the EXTREME drama that makes it comedy. It’s like an extended Carol Burnett sketch.
What is it about Ruthless! that made you want to be part of this show and cast?
I’ve known Matt Conner for years, but this is my first time working with him as a director, so I was really looking forward to that. At the audition, the women read for just about every part. And everyone was so funny, no matter what you gave them. I remember thinking that I definitely wanted to work with these talented gals.
There are so many references to other classic musicals in the show. Which of these shows really epitomize your character and why and how?
Probably Gypsy. Eve is in the background, but really craves the spotlight…so we think! Wink wink.
You all have great solos-your time in the spotlight. What are the name of your solos and what do we learn about your character while singing these solos?
I sing “Penthouse Apartment” and in the lyrics, you learn about Eve’s true motives in working for Miss DelMarco.
What song that you don’t sing is your favorite and why?
I love “It Can Never Be That Way Again.” I think Katie sounds great on that song! I try it out in my car, and it’s not so good.
If you could write another ending for the show and for your character what would it be?
Hmmm, that’s tough. Maybe Eve is the long lost half-sister of Ginger DelMarco!
What have you learned about yourself-the actor-while preparing for your role in Ruthless?
To be more daring, outrageous, bold. This show completely calls for that. It gets so difficult, even as a performer, to really let go and be silly and go too far.
The show is very big and high intensity, so Matt reminded us to find that intensity in quieter moments so the show doesn’t stay at the same big loud level all the time. Matt is very much on the side of the actor. He encourages you to just keep trying different things, keep playing. Then he’ll make suggestions and smooth out any rough areas in a scene or song. He doesn’t impose his take on a character on the actor.
What do you want audiences to take with them after seeing you in Ruthless?
Hopefully, they’ll think it’s funny! I would love it if I could make people forget that I played another character in the first part of the show. I think it is a great compliment when I’m told, “I didn’t realize that was you!”.
I’m trying to think of something. I am not easily angered to the point of ruthlessness or revenge. If someone really pushes me that far, I just pretty much stop talking to them!
What are you doing next on the stage?
I have nothing booked yet, so local theaters, I’m available!
