We’re not going to be talking about love, but I bet you can guess what we will be doing…singing about it…a LOT! So strap in, because you’re going to get two solid hours of some fantastic musical commentary about all kinds of love.
Our first blog features two trios singing about everything BUT love. Let’s see what they have to say!
What would you rather talk about besides love?
Carolyn: I’m with Eliza Doolittle from My Fair Lady on this one. “Don’t talk of stars, burning above, If you’re in love, show me!” I’d rather talk about ….. books! movies! TV shows! travel!
John: How ’bout them Redskins?
Cathy: Definitely my family – I think they’re pretty special!
Justin: Being a guy, pretty much anything…my latest root canal!
Laura: (20 unread) – I think love is a pretty good thing to talk about – better than politics these days! Or maybe a discussion on Broadway musicals would be fun.
What’s your favorite love story?
Justin: That is a tough question…perhaps because I have seen it recently (twice) but La La Land is a great love story, especially how it ends (SPOILER ALERT!) with the fantasy scene where their imagined love, and life, is perfect.
Laura: I love The Notebook. I love how the husband stays with his wife, no matter what, even though she has forgotten him – now that is love.
Cathy: Of course, my own! Sappy, I know, but true.
John: Without question, the myth of Baucis and Philemon. (Yeah, I had to look it up too. Basically, Jupiter and Mercury came to their house disguised as peasants). Their generosity far surpassed that of their rich neighbors, so the gods granted them a wish. Baucis and Philemon asked that when one died, the other would die at the same time. Upon their deaths, the gods changed the couple into an intertwining pair of trees.)
Carolyn: My favorite love story is a toss-up between Pride and Prejudice (the book or the PBS series with Colin Firth in that wet shirt) and Sense and Sensibility (I prefer the Ang Lee movie to re-reading the book, so the Janeites can shoot me now). What’s not to love about Hugh Grant, Kate Winslet, Emma Thompson, and Alan Rickman with bit parts by Hugh Laurie and Imelda Staunton? Whenever I’m worried about the state of humanity, I read/watch one of these and the world rights itself. Needless to say, I’ve been watching them a lot lately.
Which song from the show best represents your idea of love?
Cathy: “Cell Block Tango!” No, really, “The Story Goes On” because it’s about the love for a child and there’s nothing like the love a mother has for her children.
Justin: Probably “She Loves Me” because the lyrics are so mixed up and contradictory, just as true love can be.
Carolyn: As a mother of two sons, I’d have to say “Dear Theodosia” represents the fierceness and intensity of parental love better than any other song I can think of.
Laura: I guess “I Love Her, That’s Why.” It is about loving someone even if they have annoying habits. My husband may not “serenade me with his gravel voice” but he does with his snoring (sorry hubby) and “why do I stand for it – I love him, that’s why.”
