Highwood Theatre Founder Fired Amid Accusations of Criminal Conduct Against Minors

Board members resign. The website goes dark. A children's theater in crisis.

On Friday, September 26, 2019, Washington City Paper reported on serious allegations facing the former executive director and founder of the Highwood Theatre, a children’s theater company based in Silver Spring, MD. According to the Washington City Paper article, Highwood Founder Kevin Kearney is alleged to have “violated internal rules by sending sexually inappropriate text messages to a now-former student, who also worked at the theater, while the person was a minor.” Because these allegations are so serious and because they involve minors, DCMTA is sharing this information with our readers.

The entire Washington City Paper article can be read here.

DCMTA reached out to The Highwood Theatre for a statement on this topic but did not receive a reply. Internet searches show that Highwood Theatre’s website has been taken down. As of Wednesday, October 2nd, the business is listed on Google as “permanently closed.”

DC Theater Arts would like to remind readers that anyone can report suspected abuse and neglect of minors to designated hotlines in their state or municipality:
