Starting this evening, Feinstein’s/54 Below will offer an At Home series of free one-time-only streamings of its popular cabaret concerts to keep audiences entertained during the closure of all live public performances in NYC in response to the coronavirus pandemic. The schedule will include full-length tapes of past shows from the club’s archives, livestreams of sets by artists whose shows have been postponed, and sneak-peek previews of upcoming shows, streamed from the artists’ homes or other safe spaces.
In keeping with a communal spirit and the recognition that we are all in this together, the venue issued the following statement: “We are proud to be known as ‘Broadway’s Living Room’ and as such, would like to provide a moment in time and a space for our audiences to come together as a community. After hearing that so many people are suffering from isolation as a result of the social distancing guidelines, we have decided to gather our online community into a virtual room where we can enjoy performances, comment, and chat with each other.” All offerings will begin streaming at 6:30 pm, on the venue’s YouTube or Facebook page.
The online series fittingly opens with Two-Player Game, a recurrent favorite at the nightclub that was recently released as a live album. The show features the songs of Tony-nominated Be More Chill composer and lyricist Joe Iconis performed by George Salazar, who starred as Michael in the viral sensation, which enjoyed a phenomenal following on social media. Live dates of the concert event are tentatively scheduled for October 7, 9, 10, 13, and 15, pending the end of this indefinite period of isolation, but you can start getting excited about seeing it in person in the fall by watching the digital version now.
Upcoming artists in the At Home series, presently scheduled through April 21, include David Yazbek, Lorna Luft, Charles Busch, Tovah Feldshuh, Liz Calloway, Ben Vereen, and Ann Hampton Calloway, among many other top performers from the NY stage.
