Anacostia Playhouse seeks new plays for New Voices, New Works Festival

Submissions on the theme of Love will be accepted through January 15, 2023.

Anacostia Playhouse is seeking new, non-produced 10-minute and one-act plays for its 2022-2023 New Voices, New Works Play Festival. Submissions are being accepted through January 15, 2023.

The festival will run over three consecutive Monday evenings beginning April 28 at the Anacostia Playhouse located in historic Anacostia in Washington, DC. The festival is an opportunity to introduce new and seasoned playwrights to Washington’s theater community; as well as, and establish relationships among writers, producers, and directors.

This year’s theme is Love: Make Ya Do Right / Make Ya Do Wrong.

Stephawn Stephens, executive artistic director, Anacostia Playhouse, said, “The New Voices New Works Festival is an opportunity to highlight the work of local artists and help them to hone their skills. Last year’s festival brought some amazing playwrights with powerful Transitions/Transformations stories to Anacostia Playhouse audiences. I look forward to reading this year’s submissions and their take on Love and all its possibilities.”

Selected playwrights will have the opportunity to work with a professional director and professional actors to prepare for a final staged reading performance.

Play submissions should address the theme of Love, whether physically, spiritually, and/or socially. The play should be set in an East of the River community. All plays should have a maximum of four characters. Submissions must be submitted to the Anacostia Playhouse by email to [email protected].

The New Voices, New Works Play Festival is funded in part by the DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities.
