Nominations for the 2023 Chita Rivera Awards, recognizing excellence in dance and choreography on Broadway, Off Broadway, and in film, as decided by three separate nominating committees, were announced today, for shows and films that opened during the 2022-2023 theater season. For the first time, the category of Outstanding Dancer in a Broadway Show is gender-free; it has twice as many nominees as the former gendered categories and there will be two winners.
Named for the theatrical icon – one of Broadway’s greatest triple-threat talents and one of the most nominated performers in Tony Awards history (with ten nominations, two competitive awards, and the 2018 Special Tony Award for Lifetime) – the Awards will be presented on May 22, at the NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts, in a ceremony hosted by Jared Grimes (Funny Girl) and produced by Joe Lanteri (Founder and Executive Director of the New York City Dance Alliance Foundation , Inc.) in conjunction with Patricia Watt.
At the awards ceremony, John Kander will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award and BroadwayHD, founded by Bonnie Comley and Stewart F. Lane, will receive the Ambassadors for the Arts Award. Tickets are available to the general public; all proceeds benefit the NYC Dance Alliance Foundation College Scholarship Program, which awards college scholarships to talented teenagers.
