NYC’s ‘Broadway Celebrates Earth Day’ returns live and livestreamed on April 20

On Saturday, April 20, from 11 am to 3 pm, The Broadway Green Alliance (BGA), launched as an ad hoc committee of The Broadway League in 2008, with the mission of educating, motivating, and inspiring the entire theater community and its patrons to implement environmentally friendlier practices, and Times Square Alliance, founded in 1992, to improve the quality of life for the neighborhood residents and businesses while driving economic growth, will present the third annual Broadway Celebrates Earth Day, as part of the NYC Department of Transportation’s “Car-Free Earth Day” held throughout the five boroughs. The free concert will take place in the heart of NYC’s Theater District in Times Square and will be simultaneously livestreamed, so audiences around the world can enjoy the event and join in the Broadway community’s commitment to raising awareness of the climate emergency and promoting sustainability.

Hosted by Broadway Sessions’ Ben Cameron and directed by David Alpert, with Rick Hip-Flores providing musical accompaniment, the show will feature a roster of performers from the Broadway stage, including Tony Award winner Ruthie Ann Miles (Sweeney Todd), Tony nominee Anika Larsen (Almost Famous), Lissa deGuzman (Wicked), Michael Maliakel (Aladdin), Jelani Remy (Back to the Future), Alexandra Socha (Wicked), Nik Walker (Spamalot), and more to be announced.

“I love the Earth Day concert in Times Square and am excited to be participating again,” said Larsen. “It’s always so fun and inspiring and galvanizing. This year, I’m especially excited about this celebration because if there ever was an election year to think about saving our planet, this is the one!”

Joining the star-studded Broadway line-up will be student performer/activists, ages 6 to 36, from across the region’s public-school arts programs, cultural groups, and programs for neuro-diverse talent, including Cassie Okenka Voice Studio, Epic Players, Marymount Manhattan College, NYU Steinhardt, Perkiomen Valley High School, R.Evolución Latina, and Wolf Performing Arts Center.

In addition to the performers, the event will also feature interviews with environmental leaders, guest speakers from Headcount, and Julie Tighe, Director of New York League of Conservation Voters.
