Wonderfully directed by Tracy Adler (with musical direction by Barrett Johnson and choreography by Tori Farnsworth), this play is a charming stroll through childhood, filled with humor, heart, and song. Based on the legendary comic strip Peanuts by Charles M. Schulz, the musical follows Charlie Brown and his friends as they navigate school, crushes, sports, and self-discovery. James M. Toler brings a heartwarming, mellow presence to the title role, bringing a worldly perspective to Charlie Brown. His unwavering sincerity augments each scene and is complemented by his poignant expressions. A gifted vocalist, Toler excels in his solos, and his acting through song is impeccable. Andrew Agner-Nichols energetically portrays Snoopy, captivating the audience with athletic dance sequences. Agner-Nichols effectively captures both the easygoing and enthusiastic sides of this lovable pup’s personality, and his engaging tenor voice is equally pleasant.
As Charlie Brown’s sister, Sally, Julia Eakes demonstrates flawless comedic rhythm in her slapstick, particularly when chasing rabbits with Snoopy. Her personification of Sally blends effervescence and ditziness, and her soaring soprano shines through in “My New Philosophy.” Tyler M. White’s characterization of the piano-playing prodigy, Schroeder, is marked by his dynamic song-and-dance routine in “Beethoven Day,” where he passionately expresses his admiration for his idol. C.C. Gallagher and Tori Farnsworth are entertaining as the brother-sister duo of Linus and Lucy, respectively. Farnsworth’s brassy delivery perfectly undercuts Lucy’s relentless teasing in her scenes with Gallagher, whose tender rendition of “My Blanket and Me” cleverly humanizes the eponymous object.
Tracy Adler’s set and props design enhances the play’s cartoonish realm, using oversized objects to create an apt visual contrast. Adler (in tandem with Patty Sawyer) additionally created the costumes for the production, outfitting the actors in vivid colors and eye-popping patterns. Lighting designer Marianne Meadows illuminates the stage in suitable hues for each scene, utilizing scarlet tones for “The Red Baron” and more subdued lighting for the skygazing scenes. Barrett Johnson’s well-balanced sound design ensures that the musical accompaniment never overpowers the actors’ vocals, which is imperative given the intimacy of Live Arts’ performance space.
