Calendar: Play Readings, Workshops, and Short-Run Theater Events in the DMV

Play readings and workshops offer a chance to see exciting new work at various stages of development. Want to see the next big thing while it’s still being crafted? SEPTEMBER

TheaterWorks USA presents Cat Kid Comic Club: The Musical by Kevin Del Aguila and Brad Alexander, a musical adaptation of Dav Pilkey’s Dog Man spinoff series, Friday, September 26 through Sunday, September 28 at Baltimore Center Stage, 700 N. Teatro de la Luna presents Una Luna Llena de Tango/A Tango Filled Moon, an evening of live music and dance featuring guest singer Ana Maria Pfeiff, bandoneon player Emmanuel Trifilio, and poems and memories of Buenos Aires told by Mario Marcel, Friday, September 26 and Saturday, September 27 at 8:00 PM and Sunday, September 28 at 3:00 PM at 4020 Georgia Ave NW, Washington, DC. The DC International Theatre Festival presents three free panel discussions celebrating the transformative partnerships forged between American and international theater artists across borders. Events include:

ARTfactory’s Prime Time Players present Morning’s At Seven, a heartwarming and gently comic look at family, love, and the quiet revelations that come with growing older, Friday, September 19 through Sunday, September 21 at the ARTfactory, 9419 Battle St, Manassas, VA. Theater & Policy Salon presents a Social Media Salon featuring a new play, Drink in Moderation, by DC-based playwright Ben Hatt, which explores the messy world of social media content moderation, with a public conversation on how to ameliorate the digital world’s harmful impacts on individuals and communities in DC and beyond. This event will be held Tuesday, September 16 at 7:30 PM and Wednesday, September 17 at 7:30 PM in Theater Alliance’s pop-up space at 340 Maple Dr SW, Washington, DC. Everyman Theatre presents a reading of Mother Mary by KJ Moran Velz, Monday, September 15 at 7:00 PM in Everyman’s Second Floor Rehearsal Hall, 315 W. Fayette St, Baltimore, MD. This is the first reading in Everyman’s second season of Script Tease, a series showcasing new works by local playwrights. Tickets are pay-what-you-can (minimum $5) and available here.

Folger Shakespeare Library presents Antonio! a queer, punk, pirate musical by Folger Artist Fellow Ania Upstill, starring Shakespeare’s ultimate dramatic love interest, Saturday, September 13 at 5:00 PM in the Reading Room at the Folger, 201 East Capitol St SE, Washington, DC. Baltimore Center Stage presents a family-friendly performance of Magic & Hypnosis featuring David Anthony, Saturday, September 13 at 2:00 PM at 700 North Calvert St, Baltimore, MD. Tickets range from $40-$60 ($20 for college students) and are available here.

George Mason University’s School of Theater presents The Originals! 2025, an exciting evening of original new works featuring GMU’s talented student playwrights and performers, Friday, September 12 at 7:30 PM and Saturday, September 13 at 2:00 PM and 7:30 PM at the Donald and Nancy deLaski Performing Arts Building, A105, TheaterSpace, 4502 Aquia Creek Ln, Fairfax, VA. Teatro de la Luna presents four Saturdays of live bilingual musical entertainment for children at their theater at 4020 Georgia Ave NW, Washington, DC. The lineup includes:

Solas Nua and Fishamble present Show In A Bag Sharing, readings of new works in progress by Jordan Brown and Rebecca Ballinger, Saturday, September 6 at 4:00 PM at Eaton DC, 1201 K St NW, Washington, DC. Show In A Bag is a newly launched program that offers an opportunity for DMV area performing artists to create a solo show with dramaturgy from Solas Nua and Dublin’s Fishamble: the new play company. ARTfactory Actors Theatre presents Every Brilliant Thing by Duncan Macmillan, directed by Kimberly Kemp and performed by David Johnson, Friday, September 5 through Sunday, September 7 at the ARTfactory, 9419 Battle St, Manassas, VA. Peregrine Theatre Company presents The Grown-Ups, a dark comedy by Skylar Fox and Simon Henriques, Friday, September 5 through Sunday, September 7 in Rock Creek Park’s Picnic Grove #7, Beach Drive NW, Washington, DC.
