Coming to The Capital Fringe Festival: ‘Cabaret XXX: Love the One You’re With’ By Mendy Cunningham

Pinky Swear Productions’ Cabaret XXX returns to the Capital Fringe Festival, this time to reveal their dirty little secret – that love isn’t so bad, especially when you’re the one in charge.  Sure, everyone already knows that but Pinky Swear has a way of putting it like it’s never been told before. True to the art that is American cabaret, Love the One You’re With is a troop of badass, talented broads going out of bounds for all to see, putting their own sexy spin on some popular retro tunes, all the while shocking audiences with a sharp left turn from their established romantic philosophies.

Since their 2011 award-winning performance in Les Femmes Fatales, the Pinky Swear girls have “moved on from trying to exact revenge,” explains Director Toni Rae Brotons. In Love the One You’re With, the ensemble shares the story of their metamorphosis over the course of the past months. Brotons clarifies, “It may seem like we’re just throwing up a bunch of songs on stage, but there is a discernible journey that we try to weave into the evening.”

Pinky Swear is stepping up the action this summer on more levels than one. For instance, there’s more interaction with the audience and more of their performance will be impromptu reaction to anything and everything the audience gives them. They’re also stepping up the singing from last year, if that is possible, with three group numbers and a singing part for just about everyone, just about all the time. Audiences who enjoyed the dynamic between group members on stage last year will recognize that these connections are more intense and, well, kinda hot.

Transformed butterflies, maybe. Unapologetic, in-your-face sirens, definitely! Brotons promises our songstresses still have serious attitude and will be unabashedly wanton with their theatrical prowess. The Baldacchino tent will be a hot, sticky mess of estrogen flung in all directions by night’s end. One such number which promises to filthy up the place has been unofficially rated NC17, and the group will completely understand should audience members need to take a moment get their dropped jaws back into proper alignment.

Brotons recommends people arrive early to not only voluntarily tender glimpses into their own private lives for the company to exploit later, but also because everyone should want to have a temporary tattoo applied to their body somewhere, compliments of Pinky Swear. Early comers will also receive as gifts some, shall we call them, small tokens of appreciation, otherwise known as Pinky Swear can’t-be-caught-without essentials.

So, don’t bring grandma to this show (unless she’s of the spry, liberated sort), but do bring your friends and come prepared to laugh, cry, and gasp simultaneously. This one is the don’t miss of the 2012 Cap Fringe Festival!
