Dada Returns! is a play in true Dada style; it is completely absurd, irrational and avant-garde. The Dada art movement was created in Europe during the early twentieth century as a reaction to the atrocities of the First World War. The Dadaist philosophy rejects logic, praises nonsense and is very anti-bourgeois.
Dada Returns tells the story of a narcissistic poet and the wife of a banker who almost have an affair but it never comes to fruition. The play is performed in funny Dada style with many random scenes of digression and hard to follow sequences that turn out to be discussions between characters that have a circular, and pointless, reasoning. The actors Dan Awkard, Domnick Lonardo, Michael Miyazaki, Chris Mrozowski, Julie Myers and Ellie Nicoll are exceptional and they also play commentators to the plot, speculating about what will happen to the heroes of the show, narrating the action and calling themselves “the subconscious of this play.” The play also calls attention to itself because the actors announce each act and its title.
