Sinbad, Israel Houghton, & New Breed at The Patriot Center by Mike Spain

Grace Covenant Church showed Fairfax they know how to throw a celebration: have the Pastor emcee, invite the congregation, and open the doors to the public. Start the night off with a set of music from multi Grammy Award-winning Israel Houghton and New Breed who are one of the best contemporary gospel groups in the country. Then they close out the party with the hysterical comedy of Sinbad.

Israel Houghton and New Breed.

The evening started with 30th Anniversary messages and best wishes from the church’s congregation and friends on the three big screens by the stage. Pastor Brett Fuller welcomed everyone and introduced Israel Houghton and New Breed. The screens on the left and right of the stage showed closeups of the band and stage. The center screen projected lyrics so the audience could sing along.

A music lover would appreciate Israel’s blending of musical styles. Pop, rock, Latin, R&B blended together to create a beautiful sound. Fans were singing, dancing, and worshiping along. He played beautiful songs of faith including “All About You,” “You Won’t Let Go” and “Moving Forward.” They played a little more than hour and then there was a brief intermission.

Sinbad started his set with a small roast of Pastor Fuller. The comedian joked about the Pastor’s gangster days in Kansas City before he went into preaching. The crowd roared and the Pastor appeared a bit embarrassed on stage. The comedian joked about church-related subjects, growing up, relationships, and kids.

Sinbad had the crowd laughing about white gangster kids in Chantilly and how the church choir is the real gang. His comedy was interactive as he picked on a few couples in the audience as he talked about relationships. Sinbad even let teenagers get into the fun by asking him questions. He gave advice about eleven year-olds dating which was a simple no, he discussed allowances, driving, and college. Audience members were busting out laughing, stomping their feet, and applauding in approval for his set.

Sinbad.

It was the best church party ever with award-winning music followed by gut busting comedy. A host, who was glad you came, invited you back and wished you a safe journey home. What fun!

Running Time: Approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes with one 5-minute intermission.

Sinbad, Israel Houghton & New Breed played one night September 14, 2012 at The Patriot Center, 4400 University Drive, Fairfax, VA on the campus of George Mason University. For upcoming events check out their calendar or call (703) 993-3000.
