Please email the director, Darnell Morris, with resume and headshot to set up an audition ([email protected]). You will need to prepare a musical theater piece consisting of 16-32 bars of music to sing. An accompanist will be provided.
Roles Available:
-Houdini: The famous magician who immigrated to America and made a name for himself largely as an escape artist. 25-35 yrs old C4 – G5.
-2 Male Caucasian Ensemble Members.
-1 Male African American Ensemble Member.
KAT’s production of RAGTIME will feature a small 6-person ensemble that will be used HEAVILY throughout the show. They will cover small roles and have a lot of stage time.
Based on the 1975 novel by E. L. Doctorow, RAGTIME tells the story of three groups in America, represented by Coalhouse Walker Jr., a Harlem musician; Mother, the matriarch of a white upper-class family in New Rochelle, NY; and Tateh, a Latvian Jewish immigrant. Historical figures such as Harry Houdini, Evelyn Nesbit, Booker T. Washington, J. P. Morgan, Henry Ford, Stanford White, Harry Kendall Thaw, Admiral Peary, Matthew Henson, and Emma Goldman also appear. The music includes marches, cakewalks, gospel and ragtime and is mostly sung-through.
