Minnie the Moocher plays January 1-25, 2014, and Sleeping Beauty: A Puppet Ballet, part of CulturalDC’s Mead Theatre Lab Program, plays April 9-May 3, 2014.
“We have always been interested in having shows in rep,” says Co-Artistic Director Patti Kalil. “We are looking forward to having the chance to refine our puppetry skills and to make both of these shows even stronger as we revisit two of our favorite productions.”

The season opens on January 1, 2014 with a revival of Pointless’ smash-hit production from spring 2012: Minnie the Moocher. This jazz puppet spectacle features ten of Cab Calloway’s classic songs, including three that were not in the 2012 production, an eight-piece live jazz band, pantomime, dance, masks, and puppetry. The show draws visual inspiration from Fleischer Brothers’ cartoons and the exploitation films of the 1930’s to create a completely original interpretation of Calloway’s music and the jazz culture it helped inspire.

In April, Pointless will return for the second time to the Mead Theatre Lab Program to present their new adaptation of Sleeping Beauty: A Puppet Ballet. This production is a re–imagining of Pointless’ first-ever production with new puppets, a new set, and new choreography so that audiences old and new will find something fresh to love about the show. Set to the music of Tchaikovsky’s iconic ballet and drawing visual inspiration from the eccentric late 19th century Ballet Russe. Puppets will dance, battle dragons, cast spells, and discover the meaning of true love.

This year marks the first time that Pointless will be able to present their entire season in one space. “We are thrilled to have the stability of a consistent home for a year,” says Matt Reckeweg, Co-Artistic Director of Pointless, “as we allow ourselves to re-imagine these shows with full support from CulturalDC.”
