Port City Playhouse, Alexandria’s award-winning theatre company, in conjunction with Red Knight Productions, is pleased to announce the world premiere presentation of The Ballad of the Red Knight.
This rip-roaring parody of the sword- and-sorcery genre will perform on Friday-Saturday, January 24-25, January 31-February 1, and February 7-8, at 1819 N. Quaker Lane, Alexandria, VA 22302, just east of I-395 at the Shirlington exit. Evening performances on Friday and Saturday begin at 8:00 PM, with matinees all three Saturdays starting at 2:00 PM. General admission tickets are $16 for adults; $14 for seniors, military and students; and $9 for children age 12 and under.
A comedy adventure designed to be equally appealing to children and adults, The Ballad of the Red Knight follows the daring exploits of the title character as he fights to liberate the Kingdom of Medieval Story Land from the clutches of Lord Fango of the Bat People and to free his brother Prince Richard from the terrible Fruit Bat Dungeon. The show is a “prequel” to Medieval Story Land, which was first performed at the July 2012 Capital Fringe Festival and was one of only ten shows in the 130-play festival to be selected for the follow-up Fall Fringe.
Red Knight Productions is headed by Artistic Director Scott Courlander, Managing Director Katie Zitz, and Director of Development Nicholas Hitchens. Port City Playhouse is pleased to enter into its first co-production arrangement with the talented Red Knight team and to share in the excitement of premiering The Ballad of the Red Knight.
Port City will follow The Ballad of the Red Night with Next Fall, Geoffrey Nauffts’ bittersweet story of two men whose love is tested by their opposing views on faith and life; and Blues for an Alabama Sky by Pearl Cleage, tracing the struggles of talented young men and women as the Harlem renaissance gives way to the Great Depression of the 1930s.

Since its founding in 1977, Port City Playhouse has regularly received awards from area theatre organizations for the artistic and technical excellence of its productions, earning the British Players’ prestigious 2012-13 Ruby Griffith First Runner-Up Award for its production of The Drawer Boy.
