The Rainbow Theatre Project presents Say You Love Satan by D.C.-native Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa in the third slot of their inaugural season of concert readings.
Directed by John Moletress, Satan plays at Source in D.C. on Monday, February 24, 2014 at 7:30 p.m., and will be preceded by a reading of Frank Anthony Polito’s short play, White Room w/ Red Door, directed by The Rainbow Theatre Project’s Producing Artistic Director, H. Lee Gable.
Called a “smart, hip comedy” by the New York Post, Say You Love Satan is “a romantic comedy spoof of the Omen movies,” according to the playwright. It centers on graduate student, Andrew, who meets a handsome stranger named Jack, one dark and stormy night. Despite all the warning signs, and the fact that he already has a boyfriend, Andrew decides to make a go of it with Jack. And even though the warning signs include (literally) the number ‘666’ being emblazoned on Jack’s forehead, and his claims that the Devil is his father, Andrew throws caution to the wind; until he begins to realize there’s something even more sinister than his new boyfriend being exactly who he says he is.
The cast features a broad spectrum of local talent, featuring Jefferson Farber as the affable Andrew, and Joseph Carlson as his suspect lover, Jack. Rounding out the cast are Katie Hileman (Bernadette), Alex Mills (Jerrod), S. Lewis Feemster (Chad), David Lamont Wilson (Raphael), Ben Cunis (Martin), and the ubiquitous Lucrezia Blozia as the Bouncer.
Born and raised in the District, playwright Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa actually got his start after attending a week-long workshop with Paula Vogel during her residency at Arena Stage in 1989-99. Say You Love Satan was written very early on in his career as a graduate student at Yale. Since then, this author has published 10 plays, written for the hit TV shows Glee and Big Love, and is now also working on the script for the musical adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ American Psycho.
H. Lee Gable knew early on he wanted to include Satan in the lineup: “Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is a born and raised Washington, D.C. native. He is someone I have known for years and I wanted to showcase a local playwright during our first season. He represents a newer generation of playwrights that simply accept the idea that gay people exist without necessary the drama that in the past has always seemed to be part and parcel of our lives. It also doesn’t hurt that he is a very good writer with a wicked sense of humor.”
For this third reading, Gable chose another local artist, John Moletress to interpret Aguirre-Sacasa’s script. Moletress is a queer theatre maker, choreographer and performer who has worked internationally. His company force/collision is based in Washington, D.C. and in 2011 he won the Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Emerging Theatre for his co-founding of Factory 449. His current project, Jarman (all this maddening beauty) is inspired by the queer avant-garde filmmaker Derek Jarman and premieres in DC at Atlas Performing Arts Center in April 2014 before its international tour.
Moletress promises: “This is bound to be a very sexy Monday evening. I’ve assembled a very talented cast to present this highly entertaining and punchy play by one of today’s leading authors.”
Prior to the reading of Satan, is a scheduled reading of the 10-minute play White Room w/ Red Door featuring performances by Christopher Henley (Narrator), Christopher Janson (Clown), and Prairie Griffith (Mannequin), and directed by Gable. The audience should be aware that White Room features adult content dealt with in a graphic nature.
Seeing the Show
All of The Rainbow Theatre Project’s inaugural season readings are free and open to the public. Seating is first come, first served at Source, located at 1835 14th Street, NW in Washington, D.C.
Source is located approximately 2 blocks from the U Street/Cardozo Metro Station. Street Parking is also available.
Doors open at 7:00 p.m. with events kicking off at 7:30 p.m. There will be one intermission during the reading of Say You Love Satan.
