Capital Fringe 2014 Preview: ‘Homeboy Thanksgiving’ by Rhiannon Cooper

What do you get when you combine gaming, gangs, and a family meal?

A recipe for disaster.

Homeboy Thanksgiving tells the story of two estranged brothers struggling to find some common ground…on Thanksgiving. The stakes are high as they need to keep from throttling each other in the face of guild deadlines, parole, and some random foster kid in their mess of an apartment who is supposed to be helping. The question now is whether these two very different people can come together and support each other as a family or whether they’ll be torn apart on one of the most stressful days of the year.

Homeboy-Thanksgiving

We, at Young Zombies at Play, have been workshopping this original script for the past few months, and we’re extremely excited to present Homeboy Thanksgiving at the DC Fringe Festival. We’ve been having a great time fighting, falling, and cursing, and that was just what we do on our breaks during rehearsal. Seriously, though, our actors have been working hard since joining the project to develop their original characters, shove each other around, and discover the world that the characters Ray, Ernesto, Mousey, and even Ivan live in. It’s doubtful the actors will ever work on a show again where we go from talking about gang culture in LA to playing online computer games in the name of research. Two of our actors joined the project because they identified incredibly strongly with their characters and backgrounds, while the other two have almost opposite personalities. See if you can guess which is which. We’re all proud of who Ray, Ernesto, and Mousey are, and we hope that you enjoy watching them struggle. Although, I think we’d all enjoy watching Ivan struggle a little more.

Homeboy Thanksgiving is brought to you by José Zárate and Rhiannon Cooper. José is a Mexican American playwright who enjoys bringing a really intelligent humor to sometimes very troubling and sometimes very dark issues that many working class Latinos face. Rhiannon is a proud army brat who loves bringing amazing stories to life with a special place in her heart for comedy, absurdity, and fascinating female characters. Together with the actors, we are Young Zombies at Play.

We are a young group devoted to good storytelling and turning ideas and stereotypes upside down. We are geeky, eccentric, feminine, masculine, white, and brown artists who love to collect and play with amazing stories. We are dedicated to picking brains, and hope that you have fun watching what goes on in ours.

This show is intended for adult audiences due to excessive profanity.
