In Part 7 in a series of interviews with the cast of Death By Design at Greenbelt Arts Center, meet Jenn Robinson.
Joel: Introduce yourself to our readers and tell them what other shows you have appeared in and some of the roles you have played?
Why did you want to be in Death By Design at Greenbelt Arts Center?
As soon as I saw the character breakdown for Death by Design, I knew I wanted to play the role of Victoria. I also knew I enjoyed working at GAC. I had so much fun in Habeas Corpus, and I love the sense of community in Greenbelt as a whole, so it was kind of a no-brainer to audition.
Who do you play in Death By Design and how do you relate to her?
I play Victoria Van Roth, a bohemian modern dancer and artist. I definitely relate to her need to express herself artistically. I practice dance in my spare time, and even share her affinity for flamboyant scarves. The scarf I wear in the show is one of my own!
What do you admire about your character and what do you not admire?
I admire how Victoria knows what she wants and does not allow obstacles. I do not admire how she tends to disregard the feelings of others when she does, well, anything.
What have been the challenges you have encountered while preparing for your role and how have you overcome these challenges? How did your director help you?
This role required a lot of physicality and I worked with dance and fight choreographers to prepare. Ann, our director, was really great about bringing in some fantastic people to help with that aspect.
What is your big highlight in the show and what do we learn about your character when you perform it?
Near the end of the first act, Victoria seizes a chance to demonstrate her dancing. The audience gets to see her idea of art first-hand, as well as getting a better look at how she really feels towards one character in particular.
What have you learned about yourself during this whole process?
I had to learn how to provide depth to a character who is a bit of a caricature.
What do you want audiences to take with them after watching you perform in Death By Design?
That even the silly ones can be dangerous!
