It’s an act of love and giving back.
Rick Foucheux, veteran actor and esteemed member of the DC theater community, is taking to the Quotidian Theatre Company stage in Bethesda to reprise his iconic, Helen Hayes-nominated role as Erie Smith in Eugene O’Neill’s HUGHIE for a one-night only benefit on October 30, 2016.
Foucheux first took on the role in a Washington Stage Guild production in 2000, playing the down-on-his-luck gambler and Broadway low-life who commiserates with the night clerk of a seedy hotel. He’s putting on the mantle once again, this time for a good cause, but also with a different focus.
“I really wanted to have O’Neill’s beautiful stage directions read aloud,” Foucheux said, “The poetry of the language the playwright uses is simply stunning, and it shifts the play to be about the clerk, more so than Erie. Fortunately, I’m joined on stage by two excellent Quotidian company members, David Dubov, playing Charlie Hughes, the night clerk, and Steve LaRocque, reading O’Neill’s directions. It really works to bring out a new dimension to the piece.”
And Foucheux should know about new dimensions – he’s been working in DC theater for more than 30 years, and has won four Helen Hayes Awards for his work. And, now that he’s looking to “semi retire,” he wants to give back for all that DC has given him. Thus the benefit for Quotidian.
“I was blessed to arrive in Washington’s theater scene just when a number of today’s professional theaters were coming on-line – Woolly, Source, Signature, Studio, and more. And, now that I’m on the other side, so to speak, I can do this sort of work that is for another theater company to keep its great work going.”
Before the benefit performance, Quotidian will be conducting a silent auction with theatre ticket donations from Round House, Flying V, and QTC as well as spa services from Salon Fusion, and a few other surprises. Foucheux, Dubov, and LaRocque will be available after the show for a drink and bite to eat from Chef Tony’s Restaurant in Bethesda, and wine from Beer, Wine & Co.
