In part 6 of a series of interviews with Peace Mountain Theatre Company’s A Delicate Balance, meet Devora Zack.
Joel: Please introduce yourself and tell readers where they have seen you perform before on local stages.
Devora: Hi! I’m Devora Zack and local audiences have seen me perform at the Source, Kennedy Center, Atlas, Roundhouse, and a bunch of other DC venues. They may have also seen me in a number of film, video, and commercial productions.
Why did you want to be part of the cast of A Delicate Balance?
The moment I heard of this production I wanted to be Julia. It’s a fantastic play by a brilliant playwright with a gifted director and a feisty role by an exciting new theater company. Perfect!
Who are you in the show and what is your relationship to the other characters?
I play Julia, the four-time divorced daughter of Agnes and Tobias. She’s a real live wire! The themes of family and friendship will resonate – particularly due to Albee’s brilliant mix of pathos, passion, and humor.
With Edward Albee’s recent passing, how does it feel to be working on one of his masterpieces?
It’s an honor to work on one of Albee’s Pulitzer Prize winning masterpieces. It was especially moving to be in rehearsal during the time of his passing.
What do you think Edward Albee’s legacy should be? And how would you define an ‘Albee’ play?
Albee was a daring playwright, breaking from tradition – his substantial legacy is his body of work – the plays themselves. Albee plays reflect on a version of our lives often hidden from plain sight.
Have you appeared in any other productions by him?
I have not.
What do you want audiences to take with them after seeing A Delicate Balance?
I hope audiences leave in a state of reflection, with the desire to discuss and contemplate their cherished relationships – including the choices they make. Specifically, striking a balance between protecting and sharing what they most value.
A Delicate Balance plays through November 20, 2016 at Peace Mountain Theatre Company performing at Congregation Har Shalom – 11510 Falls Road, in Potomac, MD. For tickets, purchase them at the door or online.
