Capital Finge Preview: ‘WIT & WRATH: The Life & Times of Dorothy Parker’ by Claudia Baumgarten

Listen, I can’t even get my dog to stay down. Do I look to you like someone who could overthrow the government?During an FBI interrogation at her apartment in 1952.

Claudia Baumgarten’s one-woman show WIT & WRATH: The Life & Times of Dorothy Parker.

“Stringing together the highs-  (first female drama critic in America (1917);  best selling book of poetry ever published, ENOUGH ROPE (1926), and the lows (her suicide attempts, victim of McCarthyism) – of Parker’s life with her poetry and stories, Baumgarten demonstrated that Parker has lost none of her bite.”  (Sands, Brian. Review. AMBUSH Magazine, Nov. 2014)

What appeals to me in all of Dorothy Parker’s  work is her absolute adherence to the truth as she sees it.  Her short zingers, her assessments of the political scene, her observations of social inequities still ring true today.

Dorothy Parker is best known for her sharp wit.  But the impact on her readers of her compassionate essays about war-torn Spain, the understanding of human nature in her short stories, and her hilarious book and play reviews prove that Mrs. Parker is a woman still worthy of being heard and read today.

One can only imagine what Dorothy Parker would have to say about the political scene in our country today!
