2018 Tony Awards Roundup

'The Band's Visit' stakes its claim as the perfect story for America in 2018

The atmospheric and ethereal The Band’s Visit led the 2018 Tony Awards with 10 wins, including Best Musical, Best Director and Best Leading Actor and Actress in a Musical and Best Score for Composer and David Yazbek (although TV viewers didn’t get to see his acceptance speech).

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Parts 1 and 2, a drama of five hours that must be seen in two sittings, took home the award for Best Play, one of its six awards.

Once on This Island, with its immersive staging – highlighted by several chickens and a goat onstage – earned the award for Best Revival of a Musical, and Justin Peck took home the statue for Best Choreography for Carousel.

Angels in America took home three awards, including Best Revival of Play.

Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban co-hosted the event, starting the evening off with a song they penned (along with composer Shaina Taub) to cheekily remind the audience that most of them would go home emptyhanded. “This is for the people who lose, ’cause most of us have been in your shoes…”

Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and Chita Rivera were awarded Lifetime Achievement Awards.

But perhaps the most poignant moment of the evening was the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Drama Club’s rendition of “Seasons of Love.”
