DC-based theater company Nu Sass Productions is taking Marx in Soho to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this summer.
Marx in Soho, by American Historian Howard Zinn, will feature Mary Myers as Karl Marx in a 90-minute solo performance that offers audiences a glimpse into Marx’s mind as he discusses his work, his life, and “why we should all be rioting in the streets.”
Nu Sass performed Marx in Soho for DC audiences in 2017. Mary Myers played Marx in this production and earned a 2018 Helen Hayes nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Play, (Helen category).
Fans who can’t make it to Edinburgh this summer can see Marx in Soho on May 6 and 7 at NextStop Theatre in Herndon, Virginia. Other potential DC performances are in the works.
Marx in Soho was developed at Nu Sass by the self-designated “Marx Sisters”: Actor Mary Myers, Director Angela Kay Pirko, and Stage Manager Francesca Chilcote. “There are a lot of little things to consider when you’re going abroad with a show,” Pirko told DC Theater Arts. “It’s been a roller coaster ride to make sure we’re covering all our bases, but a very thrilling one to be on.”
About Nu Sass: Nu Sass Productions strives to encourage women in all aspects of theater, especially in those roles traditionally dominated by men. Nu Sass seeks to offer women opportunities to expand the roles they take on in the theater and try new things. Nu Sass explores how putting female actors into roles originally written for men can change the overall experience for the audience.
