Hip-hop improv sensation ‘Freestyle Love Supreme’ returns to Broadway

Not only is Freestyle Love Supreme, the highly-acclaimed hip-hop improv hit created by Thomas Kail, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Anthony Veneziale, the recipient of a 2020 Special Tony Award for its 2019-20 run at the Booth Theatre, it will also return this season for another strictly limited engagement, from Thursday, October 7, 2021-Sunday, January 2, 2022, with tickets sales starting today.

Produced by Kail, Miranda, Jenny and Jon Steingart, and Jill Furman, and directed by Kail, FLS  – paying homage to the legendary John Coltrane’s 1965 album A Love Supreme, with a nod to musical roots in jazz, soul, blues, and hip-hop – is created live every night, so that no two shows are ever the same, with the audience spontaneously contributing words, ideas, and inspiration. It features a roster of astounding talents providing non-stop action throughout the fast-paced intermission-less performance, spinning the audience suggestions into humorous bits, impromptu songs and riffs, and fully realized musical numbers. The vocals, encompassing singing and rapping to beat-boxing with harmonies and freestyle flow, are backed by keyboards and human percussion.

The 2021-22 Broadway company includes Andrew Bancroft (“Jelly Donut”), Tarik Davis (“Tardis Hardaway”), Aneesa Folds (“Young Nees”), Arthur Lewis (“Arthur the Geniuses”), Kaila Mullady (“Kaiser Rözé”), Chris Sullivan (“Shockwave”), and Anthony Veneziale (“Two-Touch”), with set design by Beowulf Boritt, costumes by Lisa Zinni, lighting by Jeff Croiter, and sound by Nevin Steinberg. Special unannounced guests (which may include FLS members Lin-Manuel Miranda, Christopher Jackson, Daveed Diggs, James Monroe Iglehart, Wayne Brady, Ashley Pérez Flanagan, Bill Sherman, Utkarsh Ambudkar, and many more) are planned for select performances during the run.

“We are thrilled to be back on Broadway and part of this theatrical community we love so much. The immediacy of our show, with its content driven by audience suggestion, makes it one of the rare shows that can speak to whatever is happening in the moment. We cannot wait to be onstage at the Booth Theatre making people laugh,” said Kail. “If live theater is coming back, so is FLS,” added Miranda. “Our most important collaborator is the audience, and we can’t wait to get back in the Booth.”

Freestyle Love Supreme plays Thursday, October 7, 2021-Sunday, January 2, 2022, at the Booth Theatre, 222 West 45th Street. For tickets, go online, or call (212) 239-6300. There will also be a limited number of $25 lottery tickets offered per performance. Sign up for updates on the FLS website.
