Off-Broadway’s ‘Blue Man Group’ celebrates its 30th anniversary at Astor Place Theatre

There’s good reason why the iconic award-winning Blue Man Group is celebrating the major milestone of its 30th anniversary this month at the intimate downtown space of Off-Broadway’s Astor Place Theatre: audiences and critics alike simply can’t get enough of it!

The show – first conceived by Chris Wink, Matt Goldman, and Phil Stanton, and now owned and operated by Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group – was thoroughly unique and innovative when it premiered three decades ago in 1991, and there’s still nothing like this one-of-a-kind phenomenon today. It’s original, it’s fun, and it’s nearly inexplicable. You just have to be there to experience the performance firsthand, as three curious, nameless, bald, blue men explore our pop culture with a sense of inquisitiveness and marvel, make music and art without saying a word, and involve the delighted audiences in their sometimes-messy creative vision, taking us through a series of multi-sensory segments that feature paint, makeshift instruments, food, movement, and technology. You never know what to expect or what will happen next in this strange, joyous, and entertaining interactive journey – kind of like life itself. Or an invasion of Earth by three aliens from outer space.

Following the long pandemic closure of live performances, Blue Man Group reopened in September, then presented its official 30th-anniversary show on Wednesday, November 17, preceded by a fabulous pre-show reception at the White Oak Tavern that included up-close-and-personal photo ops with the cast and a new themed cocktail called the Blue Man-tini. Check out some images from the party here, and then be sure to check out the live in-person experience at the theater:
