Capital Fringe 2014 Preview: ‘The Other Day’ by Mark Jason Williams

Playwright Mark Jason Williams and Director Michael R. Burgtorf return to the Capital Fringe Festival this year with The Other Day—a powerful drama about human connections, and the lengths we go to love someone. The two previously collaborated on the 2013 Capital Fringe favorite Recovery.

The Other Day comes to the Capital Fringe Festival after successful runs in Chicago and New York City, where it received the Planet Connections Theatre Award for Outstanding Playwriting of a New Script.

In a review of the New York production, theater reviewer Adam Rothenberg wrote, “From the moment it started, I could tell this play was written from the heart and soul of a talented playwright….Mark’s writing was so raw and honest that The Other Day had me enthralled from beginning to end.”

Written with biting humor and a refreshing dose of honesty, The Other Day follows four characters–a gay couple who meet in a substance-abuse support group; a woman coming to terms with her failing marriage, and a charming foreigner wrestling with a secret–as their lives intersect and each embarks on a personal journey that will redefine their relationships, and themselves, in surprising ways.

“My primary goal was to create a play that explores the nuances and complexities of intimate relationships in a relatable way,” says Mark. “I think relationships are universally complicated and we all face the same issues relating to insecurities, doubts, and finding the balance between loving someone for who they are and staying true to yourself, so The Other Day isn’t about being gay or straight–it’s about a universal human experience.”

For this production, the director and playwright have assembled an exciting new cast and crew from the D.C. area, including: actors Matthew Williamson, Dannielle Hutchinson (who also starred in last year’s Recovery), Jase Parker and Dash King; Sound Designer Max Krembs (who did the sound for Recovery), Lighting Designer Heather Mork, and stage manager Christa Blackmon.

“I am excited to be working with Mark and Michael to bring The Other Day to the stage,” adds Matthew Williamson, who plays the lead role, Mark.  “The Other Day is a journey that everyone will fall in love with.”
