Capital Fringe 2014 Preview: ‘Medea’s Got Some Issues’ by Joanna Castle Miller

Medea’s Got Some Issues – the Funniest Tragedy of the Summer

The first time I saw Lisa Hodsoll read the role of Medea in Medea’s Got Some Issues, it was to a packed house at the Former Residence of the Ambassadors of Spain.

She read from the script with minimal blocking under director Joshua Morgan. She wore no costume, and had only minor props. But after she received a long standing ovation and requests for her signature, it was clear: Lisa Hodsoll was destined to play this unstable, hilarious, accursed woman.

At the time, I was new to No Rules Theatre Company; and when I saw them bring this kind of power and energy to Spanish playwright Emilio Williams’ script, I knew I wanted to be a part of it too, somehow.

Fast forward a little less than a year. Medea’s Got Some Issues, starring Lisa Hodsoll, is about to premiere at the Capital Fringe Festival, with Joshua Morgan directing, myself producing, and SPAIN arts & culture co-presenting.

To speak for all of us, it was a no-brainer.

This show has brought together continents, and not just because we all love great theater. Lisa’s performance of Emilio’s script – like the Medea tragedy that inspired it – speaks to issues that affect all of us. It tackles the role of women in society, the loneliness of feeling abandoned, and the devastation of being betrayed. It freely mocks DC theater, the culture that surrounds it, and the lows of working in show business.

And yet somehow, at the same time, this tour-de-force also makes us laugh until we cry.

If that isn’t catharsis, I don’t know what is.
