The Nativ-A-Tease: A Burlesque-acle on 22nd Street

The Nutcracker, A Charlie Brown Christmas, Miracle on 34th Street… it’s that Christmas Special time of the year when families gather around the plasma flatscreen and enjoy eggnog and gingerbread. The Nativ-A-Tease! A Visionary Variety Tribute to the Story of Christmas (kind of) on Saturday, December 6th at the Bier Baron is nothing like that! Sprung from the mind of burlesque boss Reverend Valentine (yes, she is ordained and keeping with the holiday theme she was born on Valentine’s Day) and company it’s like they took Bad Santa and decided to go for Worst Santa Ever!

The basic story goes a Pastor with multiple personality disorder hires a Waiting for Guffman type director and a mysterious guest star “who’s a really big deal” to spruce up his church’s annual Christmas play. All hell breaks loose when the guest star (could it be she used to be the mean kid on Little House on the Prairie?) shows up drunk and the director keeps getting the birth of Christ confused with The Wizard of Oz. The show is punctuated with musical numbers, burlesque and sideshow.

The cast features some of the area’s biggest burlesque and sideshow talent: Valentine Candy’s Reverend Valentine and Candy del Rio star respectively, but not respectfully, as the dubiously Virgin Mary and a very sexy angel and sheep.  Cheeky Monkey Sideshow’s Swami YoMahmi and Mab Just Mab play the Pastor and Guest Star. Circus showman and boylesquer Jim Dandy (he’s Ringling Bros. trained and been in Cosmo!) is the donkey carrying Mary and all grown up Jesus! Boylesquers Aaron Spaace and Pole Courter complete the cast as an angel and horny shepherd boy and the director and Joseph.
