2015 Capital Fringe Review: ‘Good Egg Fables’

Why did the chicken cross the road? To create a heartwarming play devised by Good Egg Community Theatre!

Their Good Egg Fables, now playing at Capital Fringe’s Brookland Artspace Lofts, begins with one farm animal, Roscoe the Rooster, (an adorable handmade puppet) leaving home. The result takes us through a series of short stories centering around a group of animals preparing for their yearly Woodland Games, who along the way learn important lessons about communication, friendship, and community.

There’s a rambunctious Chipmunk, Otter BFFs, mayoral Beaver, shy Possum, and overbearing Squirrel, each with their own unique struggles and lessons to learn. Infusing these critters with energetic quirk and vivacity are a troop of six actors, each bringing distinct and often comical qualities to their characters. These actors, all Good Egg Community Theatre Company members, interact with each other and the audience in lively, good-natured spirits that makes everyone from age 1 to 100 smile.

What sets this show apart is its great use of casual audience participation, inviting its young audience members to help the characters and move the story along by use of clapping or verbal responses. Directors Jessica Lloyd Krenek and Emily Jane Warheit keep the show’s pacing and style upbeat and engaging; not to mention, nothing more than animal masks and cardboard boxes aid the story– creating a simplistic, atmosphere fully inviting one’s imagination to take hold.

By inviting children into the world of the play, Good Egg Fables provides a fun, accessible first experience with live theater that can be recommended for children of all ages as we all learn how to get along and keep the peace in our communities and around the world.

Running Time: 50 minutes.

Good Egg Fables plays through Sunday, July 26, 2015 at Dance Place: Brookland Artspace Lofts Studio — 3305 8th Street NE, in Washington, DC. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit their Capital Fringe.
