Katherine Dunn’s novel, Geek Love, has awakened and inspired many a carny-hearted performer since it was first published in 1989. Come, enter a world of fire-eaters and human pincushions, lizard girls, and carny dancers, two-headed babies and a variation on a classic geek act as some of the area’s finest sideshow, variety and burlesque performers pay tribute to Geek Love on August 9 at the Bier Baron! We’ll be transforming the Dupont bar into the Glass House, a burlesque club specializing in oddities and featured in Katherine Dunn’s novel.
Your performers for the evening are:
- Serving as the evening’s MC and narrator, tying our show together, is Helen Hayes Award-winning actress/director Suzanne Richard!
- Mab just Mab, DC’s own sideshow girl combining neo-vaudeville with classic sideshow like glass walking and blockhead. Mab was the winner of the 2012 Americana Burlesque and Sideshow Festival’s Artist of the Year.
- Kay Sera, one of the founders of Bawdy Shop Burlesque, 21st Century Burlesque calls her “An imaginative and memorable performer.”
- Jim Dandy, a former Ringling Clown and knife juggler brings his circus showmanship to the Glass House.
- Sideshowman Charlie Artful performs classic feats of fire, pincushion and “lifting.
- Pervpunk drag performer Lucrezia Blozia has been part of the alternative performance scene in DC, NY, and LA for the past 15+ years as an actress and musical comedienne.
- The Glass House is the second production of The Round World, a new production company founded by Chris Griffin, who started Hope Operas, DC’s serialized theatre festival and was co-founder of Cherry Red Productions, DC’s notorious pervpunk theatre company. The Round World’s mission is to combine theatre, burlesque, sideshow and circus to create exciting and scintillating new works. The name comes from the e.e. cummings’ poem, “damn everything but the circus.”
The Glass House plays August 9, 2015 at the Bier Baron – 1523 22nd Street, NW, in Washington, DC. Doors open at 7:00pm, sand the show starts at 8:00 pm. Tickets are available for $12.00 in advance through Brown Paper Tickets or $15.00 at the door, the day of the show.
