Kids Week (February 15-19) at the Intrepid Museum is going virtual this year, with dozens of streaming demonstrations, shows, workshops, performances, and special guests that will keep kids of all ages educated, entertained, and connected through themed daily activities. Not only can they explore space and science, and learn all about natural history and animals, but on Wednesday, February 17, from 10 am-3 pm, they can also engage with the performing arts!
Beginning at 10:15 am, Ballet Hispánico’s School of Dance will offer a free presentation of its early childhood program Los Pasitos, featuring a dance class focused on developing coordination, spatial awareness, and musicality, with an emphasis on each child’s individual self-expression. Recommended for ages 2-6, the presentation will be led by Rebecca Tsivkin, Ballet Hispánico’s Early Childhood Programs Associate, and will include, along with the class, a photo- and video-filled slideshow and a Q&A session.
To prepare for the session, participants should wear something that allows for full body movement, and should have two 4-6’ ribbons or ropes to make a path, three cushions to jump over, one book or puzzle to run around, and a scarf, wand, or special object to pose with. Family members are welcome to join in the fun, stretching with the starfish, jiggling with the jellyfish, and springing with the seahorses, on the journey by boat, plane, and imagination through this magical movement adventure.
Kids Week attendees will also receive a special 10% discount code (valid 2/18-21) to Ballet Hispánico’s full virtual spring session of Los Pasitos (April 12-June 10, 2021). Registration opens on February 16 and runs through March 31.
Following the ballet presentation, at noon, kids (recommended for ages 8+) can see (and have a chance to talk to) a member of The Radio City Rockettes, who will teach a lesson in choreography from the iconic “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers” featured in the troupe’s annual Christmas Spectacular. And at 2:00 pm, Jazz at Lincoln Center’s WeBop program presents The Duke’s Train Adventure, in which children (recommended for ages 2-6) and their caregivers will take a musical adventure to discover the music of Duke Ellington, while exploring different ways to make music together. Attendees are requested to come prepared with homemade shakers (small containers filled with lentils, rice, sprinkles, etc.), homemade drums (cardboard boxes, cans, or empty plastic containers), and colorful scarves or handkerchiefs.
