2022 Capital Fringe Review: ‘This Is Cabaret’ by DC Cabaret Network

You won’t even notice you’re off-Broadway with this mini concert.

This Is Cabaret is a delightful series of show tunes performed by the talented singers of the DC Cabaret Network. The concert, dedicated to late award-winning musical director George Fulginiti-Shakar, is directed by Judy Simmons and Howard Breitbart.

Breitbart is also the keyboardist for the singers, providing their accompaniment, and he stole the show. The audience could feel Breitbart’s energy as his fingers danced across the keyboard and he leaned into each individual note of every single song. Breitbart deserves his own show.

All seven vocalists were fantastic, too. Only one of them struggled to hold some of the high notes in his song, but that was overshadowed by the rest of the incredible performances.

There was a range of show tunes sung, so it’s safe to say This Os Cabaret had a number for everybody — including LGBTQ+ representation in terms of both the artists and the songs they sang.

Especially noteworthy performers include the regal, elegant Maureen Kerrigan, who looked and sounded as though she just stepped out of an Old Hollywood film. There was a delightfully warm, rich tone to her voice.

Heather Frank also had a spectacular debut as a songwriter, singing two songs she created with Fulginiti-Shakar’s encouragement. One poked good fun at Britain’s Royal Family, and the other was a twangy ballad about a bisexual cowgirl.

Every performer also gave a little context before the songs they sang, letting the audience know how each song related to them personally. It was a nice touch!

It’s worth noting the official Capital Fringe Festival website says This Is Cabaret is for ages 13+, but the show was very kid-friendly.
