David S. Kessler was awarded this year’s Gary Lee Maker Audience Award by DCTheatreScene, before a performance of textsandbeheadings/Elizabeth R, at Folger Theatre on Friday night October 2nd.
According to Editor and Publisher Lorraine Treanor in her announcement today: “A recently retired zookeeper, whose love of animals and passion for theater merged Wombat Drool, his well-received Capital Fringe production last summer, David Kessler is the sixth person to receive the recognition of his role as an outstanding member of the DC area theatre audience. Previous winners include David Tannous (2011), Alison Drucker and Tom Holzman (2012), Linda Bryce (2013), and Barbara Bear (2014).”
I am a huge fan of David Kessler and I am thrilled that he was selected to receive this award in memory of a dear friend of mine who loved theatre and whose courageous battle with cancer was an inspiration to all of us who loved him. I think about him often when I am in the theater.
The Gary Lee Maker Audience Award is keeping Gary’s legacy alive and I am grateful to Lorraine and Tim for honoring so many well-deserved recipients who have given so much to local theater, and who light up a theatre when they attend a show.
